The difference between hardshell and softshell? Against water and wind, "hard" is the highest. "Soft" has limited water and wind resistance. But it's softer and more comfortable. "Hard" is designed for extreme conditions, "soft" for milder weather. "Hard" is the outer layer, "soft" also or the middle under the hardshell.
